Today I had another amazing walk in the south of France. Totally different landscape to where I was a week ago which made it all the more interesting. I was a little apprehensive when starting as I wanted to follow a trail and looking at Google maps it wasn't that well defined ... in fact on several occasions it completely disappeared but fortunately I have the map.me app on my phone and that was enormously helpful to keep me on the right track. When I got to my final destination of St Vallier-de -Theiy and having mooched about the backstreets and the church I happened to come across this incredibly clever sheepdog.
Backpacking again!
I first became interested in South East Asia, especially Malaysia, when I read Somerset Maugham's short stories based upon his own experiences of travelling in that region in the early 1900's. Having spent the last four years living like a hermit in France, the need to go out and travel became ever more attractive and SEA seemed like an obvious place to go. When I was told about Workaway and cheap backpacking Hostels the possibility of travelling on a very tight budget became a reality.

Autumn in the South of France
It's been a very busy but interesting autumn .... so many places ... so many people ... so many new experiences ... however trying to compose and type on a smartphone is very very tedious so here are photos of some of the places I have been to this autumn.
'Maison Tranquille'
half an hour from Carcassonne set in the most beautiful landscape scenery.

Back to Malaysia
"When English author Somerset Maugham spun his tales about the fascinating and little-known Southeast Asian colony of Malaya, he invoked an era of tropical opulence, married to the intrigue and drama of hidebound British civil servants and expatriate planters living in paradise."
One of the photos below is of the Royal Club in Ipoh, a large town in central Malaysia, and it was evocative, poignant and a bit weird to be in a place which Somerset Maugham visited and to imagine him and other expatriates sitting under the shade of the trees watching pink faced English men in 'whites' calling out " oh jolly well done old boy"

Having stayed in the most boring hostel of my travels in Ipoh I am now in Taiping helping a young and inspiring couple to hopefully realise their dream of setting up a sustainable development project.
26th April ... Another volunteer and myself have gone to Langkawi Island for r&r!
